What to Expect
Most people say it was nothing like they imagined.
We want to give you a real picture of what happens — from the moment you arrive to the shape of your days in treatment. The less unfamiliar it feels, the easier it is to take the first step.
Your First Program Day at a Glance
- Arrival You arrive. We introduce you to the space and the team — no pressure, no rushing.
- Orientation Intake paperwork and a brief health and clinical assessment. Quieter than you expect.
- Your team You meet your primary counselor and get oriented to the program and how your days will be structured.
- Programming Depending on what time you arrive, you may join programming that day. Either way, the rhythm of treatment begins here.
- End of day The first day is behind you. The hardest part was deciding to come.
Your First Days
Treatment is structured. It isn't clinical.
When you arrive
Someone will be waiting for you. Your first hour is mostly paperwork and introductions — nothing confrontational, nothing that requires you to have all the answers yet. The staff here have seen the full range of what people feel walking in. Terrified is common. Numb is common. Relieved is common. Whatever you're carrying, it's familiar to us.
You'll have time to get oriented to the space and the program before anything begins. The first day is for you to arrive — that's the whole job.
What your days look like
Treatment has structure, and for most people that structure becomes something to hold onto rather than resist. The program day has a shape to it. There are individual therapy sessions, group sessions, and — because this is an LGBTQ-affirming program — spaces where who you are is the starting point, not a variable to work around.
There's also time between sessions. Time to journal, to sit outside, to talk with peers who understand more of your experience than most people in your life have been able to. The rhythm builds over days, not hours.
Family, and the people you love
Treatment works best when the people who matter to you are part of the picture, in whatever way makes sense for your situation. Your primary counselor is a good place to start those conversations — what involvement looks like, what boundaries feel right, and how to handle the relationships that are complicated.
If family involvement is complicated — if the people at home are part of what you're working through — that's something to name with your counselor early. We work with where you actually are, not where it would be easier for us if you were.
You Stay Yourself
Your identity isn't something to manage.
It's the foundation of your care.
Inspire Recovery is an LGBTQ-affirming program. Your pronouns are used correctly from the day you arrive. Your identity is never framed as a variable to neutralize, a factor to account for, or a topic for treatment unless you bring it there yourself.
Treatment here is also voluntary. You are not being held or managed — you are choosing to be here. If questions come up at any point, you can ask them. If something feels wrong, you can say so. The people you're working with want to earn your trust over time, not assume it on day one.
Take the Next Step
You don't have to figure out the next step on your own.
Our admissions team can answer your questions, talk through your options, and help you understand your insurance coverage. There is no pressure to make a decision on the call.
What to Bring
Pack light. We'll handle the rest.
You don't need to arrive with everything figured out. Before you come, our admissions team will send you specific guidance on what to bring — including anything needed for treatment and, if you'll be staying in housing, what to pack for that too. Nothing will be a surprise.
In general, think practical and comfortable. The list below covers the basics. Your admissions contact can answer any questions before your start date.
The basics
- Photo ID and insurance card
- Comfortable clothing
- Toiletries and everyday personal items
- A few personal items that help you feel comfortable
- A notebook or book, if you use one
Admissions will send you complete packing guidance before you arrive. Reach out to them with any questions beforehand.
