Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
Intensive outpatient treatment programs (IOP) provide flexible, comprehensive care that bridges the gap between outpatient and inpatient programs. These structured rehab programs help people who cannot put their lives on hold for full-time care to get addiction treatment.
Inspire Recovery’s LGBTQ-friendly intensive outpatient program involves 3 or more hours of structured counseling and addiction education a day, usually split across 3 to 5 days a week. With our many holistic sessions, participants can break free of addiction on a schedule that works for them.
What is an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program?
IOPs are highly structured programs that treat substance addiction and help prevent clients from relapsing. They work for people who do not need medical detoxification or round-the-clock supervision. Participants are able to continue with their home, work, or school responsibilities.
While IOPs offer many of the same therapeutic approaches as other kinds of addiction treatment programs, their intensity is less than that of inpatient rehab and higher than standard outpatient programs. People may go from withdrawal management or inpatient programs to IOP or start with it from the outset.
Who Could Benefit from an Intensive Outpatient Program?
You can tell if an IOP will work for someone if:
- They were recently discharged from a higher level of care but still require close attention.
- Once-a-week therapy is not bringing improvement
- Their addiction is worsening and significantly impacts daily tasks.
- They need intensive care, but a full-day program is too much commitment.
However, an IOP does not work for everyone, especially when the person in question is at risk of hurting themselves or others. In these situations, Inspire Recovery will refer you to a trust and LGBTQ-friendly residential rehab center within our network. You can always call us to speak to someone who will help clarify your options and get you the most suitable care.
Benefits of an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
There are many reasons why this addiction treatment program may work for you; some of which we discuss here:
Flexibility
This is the biggest plus IOP brings to the table. People who want to can keep meeting their daily responsibilities without sacrificing their need for effective addiction treatment.
Continued Support
Transitioning from 24/7 care to none at all can often feel daunting when daily life is filled with stressors and potential triggers. An IOP offers ongoing support to patients who need intensive support following discharge from an inpatient program.
Opportunities to Apply Learned Skills in the Outside World
IOPs allow people to practice the skills they learn with the program as soon as they learn it. They can use their newly acquired communication skills and coping strategies in real-life situations with their friends, families, colleagues, acquaintances, and strangers.
Detailed and Structured
Although an IOP is only a partial-day program, it still provides routine and stability to what might be an otherwise chaotic and stressful life. Patients can follow a clear treatment plan that may include psychoeducation, skills-building groups, occupational therapy, and other therapeutic activities.
What to Expect in an IOP
The first step will be an evaluation by an addiction care professional who will make a personalized plan that works for your unique case. Treatment will typically offer a mix of therapy appointments and group support sessions.
Group Therapy
This form of treatment provides participants with a supportive environment where they may share their experiences with other LGBTQ people with similar struggles. In this setting, they get to discuss their issues and concerns as they go through the recovery process. Group therapy lets clients receive peer feedback and support.
Family Therapy
This kind of therapy allows clients to address substance abuse-related struggles they experience in the context of their home. It gives them the space for open communication and to rebuild their relationships with the help of a highly qualified moderator.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one therapy gives room for patients to work through deep issues that prevent them from achieving sustained sobriety. They have the privacy to truly express themselves while counselors help them work through trauma and triggers and develop better coping strategies.
Art Therapy
Art allows people to transmute their feelings into beautiful expressions. It provides a channel through which they can grow more comfortable in their uniqueness.
How Long Does an IOP Last?
There is no particular timeframe for all intensive outpatient programs. Each one is tailored to a client’s needs. To give the best outcomes, they typically last at least 90 days. These programs require at least nine hours a week, in comparison to partial hospitalization programs, which may require six hours or more a day, and standard outpatient programs, which usually need just an hour or two, one to three times a week.

Is medical detox available in an intensive outpatient treatment program?
Medical detox is a short-term service that is more of a physical treatment than a psychological one. It provides a supervised environment for patients to clear out substances from their bodies while withdrawal symptoms are managed. Inspire Recovery offers medical detox services, but our treatment programs begin when you are stable.
Is an intensive outpatient treatment program the same as rehab?
Rehab or rehabilitation is a catch-all term that applies to various kinds of treatment services that address substance abuse and full-blown addiction. Rehabilitation can also include treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders. Outpatient treatment programs are a kind of rehabilitation service. Others include outpatient rehab, day or night rehab, 12-step support groups, etc.
