If I go to an LGBTQ Drug Rehab will my Family know?

Drug and alcohol addiction is a serious problem in the LGBT community, mainly due to all the issues that LGBT people regularly face. This is why there are so many drug rehab programs that are geared toward people in this community. These programs are invaluable those who identify as gay, bisexual or transgender who are struggling with addiction since so many address problems that might not come up in other substance abuse programs.

And yet, some people might still be hesitant to seek treatment from an LGBT drug rehab center for fear of being “outed” as gay. Our society places a large stigma on being gay. That stigma is arguably larger than the one that comes from having an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

No Need to Fear

If you’re afraid that your family will know that you are seeking treatment at an LGBT drug rehab center, you don’t have anything to worry about. Florida confidentiality laws state that the staff of the rehab center will never be able to disclose that you are seeking treatment. They also will not be able to repeat anything that you have disclosed during your stay. All of this should go without saying if you are covering your treatment through your own insurance or out of your own pocket, but your confidentiality will be preserved even if you are on your parents’ insurance plan. The staff of any reputable LGBT drug treatment center knows that not all people who identify as gay or bisexual are out to their families, and understand what kind of effect being “outed” can have on a person’s life and their relationships. Besides, the most important thing is that you receive treatment for your addiction and any underlying issues that may have driven you to using drugs and alcohol.
