What is EDMR?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, eases the distressing effects of traumatic memories associated with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
Who developed EDMR?
This treatment approach was developed in the late 1980’s by the American psychologist, Francine Shapiro, Ph.D.
How EDMR works
At Inspire Recovery, a licensed therapist uses a technique called Visual Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) which involves having you watch and follow a light moving from left to right. When doing this therapy, the nervous system fixates on this movement, and as a result of the attention being occupied by the left right movement, the brain cannot fully focus on the problematic memory and the related distress is relaxed. The traumatic event is inhibited and can be conditioned to have a changed response to the memories that were once emotionally debilitating. What was once a negative effect to a traumatic response can become a positive one.
